Westmost's early growth could be blamed on the development of the Illinois-Michigan Canal, which was authorized in the 1820s but did not develop until the 1830s. In 1833, the land was inhabited by the Potawtami. Many of the Westmont workers turned to farming when the Panic of 1837 halted canal development, which led Westmont to be known as on of the most advanced sections of Illinois.
